When kids are entering the world of soccer it’s understandable that everything might seem particularly large. This is why pitches are normally scaled down, the goals are generally smaller in comparison, and the playing time is usually shorter. In addition there’s one more item that’s also scaled down to suit the age of the participant and that’s the ball itself. With this in mind, we thought that it would be a good idea to explain a little about ball sizing so that you know the ideal kit for your child.
Size No 3
Apart from mini-balls this is the smallest size of ball you can get. A little over 60cms in circumference it weighs just over 280 grams. These generally suit children under the age of 8 as the ball won’t come up so high against the shin when standing next to it. This makes it far easier for younger kids to learn ball control skills. If your child is over the age of 8 but small in stature, they might also benefit from a size 3 ball.
Size No 4
For players between the ages of 8-12 a size 4 ball is normally the right solution. Ideal for playing on a smaller (usually half-sized) pitch with smaller goals, a size 4 ball averages out at around 66cms in circumference and around 360gms in weight. As the age range suitable for this particular ball covers 4 years or more, so leagues might limit this size ball to under 10’s. This being the case it’s worth finding out before you invest in the wrong ball for your child.
Size No 5
This is the international standard sized match ball for children over the age of 12 and adults alike. Weighing in at around 450gms it’s clearly the heaviest of the three sizes. In addition with a circumference of approximately 71cms it’s the largest too. Prices can vary dramatically when purchasing a ball of this size and can start from as little as eighteen Australian dollars for a cheaper training ball through to two hundred dollars for a good quality match-play ball. Some are even more expensive than this, especially if it’s the same brand and make of ball that’s used in the World Cup.
So now you know a little more about ball sizes it’s worth taking a little time to make sure you get the right ball for your child or coaching group. Remember the perfect sized ball is likely to enhance their training and make it more fun, so it pays to get it right.
