We all know the expression ‘kids are like sponges’ so not only do they soak up so much information they just love to keep on learning too. With this in mind teaching 6 year old kids the finer arts of soccer should be a breeze right? Well only if you know how to go about it. The problem is that if kids aren’t stimulated they’ll soon let you know. So to avoid having a kids’ mutiny on your hands, here are some top tips for getting the best out of a 6 year old would-be soccer player.
Make it fun
Learning doesn’t have to be all intense and serious, especially not at this age. So keep it light. Let the kids laugh and giggle and above all, have fun yourself.
Plan for every practice
As stated earlier, kids will soon tell you in no uncertain terms when they’re bored so it’s vital to plan for every training session. This way you can incorporate fun and learning into the mix without having to think about it on the hoof.
Connect with them
Before every session spend 5 minutes connecting with them on their level. Ask them stuff about school, what they’re looking forward to most at the weekend, or even what they thought about the previous practice session. Having a chit chat also gives the time to get to know each other too.
Get them involved
Getting the kids involved from day one can help the team atmosphere. How about when having a practice game to let them pick. Or alternatively how about letting them come up with a warm up or warm down exercise and them carrying it out. Get them involved and they’ll love it.
Stay in tune
Finally when things start to deteriorate in practice as they often do with kids of this age it means that they’re getting a little bored and want to do something else. So if they’re rolling around in the dirt instead of dribbling practice, then change drills to something else. The key is to stay in tune with them and be prepared to switch it up if things aren’t going according to plan.
