With soccer now having such a massive global audience, the old days of a club finishing their season, players heading off on their holidays for a couple of months and then returning for a few weeks pre-season training before starting the new season, are long-gone!
The modern ‘top-level’ soccer player realistically only now gets a couple of weeks holiday and then they are straight back into things! Boo hoo! we hear many cry, rather sarcastically – they are paid millions, idolized and have fantastic lifestyles!
Well, this maybe true but is it sometimes too much? West Ham’s Andy Carroll over the last two seasons began both pre-season training with great vigor only to find himself out for the first 4-5 months of both seasons due to picking up injuries in pre-season warm-up games.
The question is also of burn-out? How many players who played in this years World Cup in Brazil, may find they start their new season well, but start to see their form and energy levels drop by Christmas due to just too much soccer!
Of course, the modern footballer can now rely on top quality sports scientists and fantastic physios/medical departments from their clubs to monitor fitness levels and fatigue etc – but what of seeing the best of players at their peak level of form. If they are pushed too hard, we may see a spell of great form that result in a few months out injured.
Recently, a crowd of 109,000 in the U.S. (a new world record attendance for a soccer match) watched a friendly match between Man Utd and Real Madrid. Even the Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal, didn’t want his team going all the way to America in preparation for the new season. However, he surely could not argue with the huge amount gained from branding and marketing at such an event.
The bottom-line is, we’ll all keep keep watching as in some ways, soccer is like a soap opera…we all love to see the characters and the drama of a season pan-out and if we tune out, there will always be plenty of new fans tuning in, to take their place – Ah the great game!
