Although children are generally inquisitive by nature and like to try out new things they can also become shy, especially around new surroundings. Although confidence comes with age, if your child is a little on the shy side then there are some simple ways that you can help them to become more self-assured.
Try not to speak for your child
Although it’s tempting to jump in there when someone asks your child a question, try and hold back and let them answer the question themselves. In most cases they’ll step in quickly once they know they aren’t going to get a helping hand from mum or dad, but if they are struggling to express the right words then that’s when you might want to jump in and help them out. The important thing is to let them try and answer first.
Get them to participate in sport
Sport particularly team sport like soccer is a great way for kids to overcome shyness. As sport (particularly team sport) is structured there’s often less room for error, putting shy kids at ease. Aside from this, they might want to approach and mix with other kids but simply don’t know how to do it on their own. Team sports such as soccer gives them the perfect opportunity to do this in a learning and fun environment.
Try not to label them
To a young child parents are incredibly powerful and this means everything you say can have an impact on your child. Therefore next time you take them to meet new people try not to say “Oh, he/she’s just shy” or “He/she gets nervous around people they don’t know.” These are phrases that can stick with a child which in turn helps to formulate that type of identity. Instead how about changing it around by saying “He/she’s really excited to be here”or ‘”He/she loves to meet new people”.
Expose them to new people constantly
Wherever you go, whether it’s the supermarket, the park, or the local swimming pool, you’re probably going to bump into people you know. Don’t forget to introduce your child too. Exposure to new people is going to make them feel more comfortable around strangers as time goes on and will help to build their confidence levels too.
